In its 15th year, Interior Design’s prestigious Best of Year design awards program honors the most significant design work of the year.

“We’re honoured to be among this year’s winners,” said David Feldberg, Teknion President and CEO. “Essa is a new type of work chair that responds to changes we’re seeing in seating demand as offices move toward a more relaxed and comfortable aesthetic. We’ve been working closely with PearsonLloyd for several years. Their design work on Essa certainly breaks new ground in the task seating category.”

Given the move towards an office with a softer edge, the need for a light, less technical task chair has emerged. Essa combines elegance with ergonomics, providing just the right amount of support through curves and contours rather than multiple adjustment mechanisms. Promoting natural shifts in position, Essa is ideal for an array of applications including, mobile work and active work settings. Essa is modern, yet inviting. The elegant full sweep of the back is echoed by the fluid line of molded armrests. With a name derived from the word essence, Essa captures a pure, sculptural shape within a pared-down scale.

Essa is available with or without armrests, in both fixed or height adjustable formats. Three fully-dipped finish options provide a seamless look that maintains a unified form. A signature flowing fixed arm provides a soft yet strong look and feel, while a five-star base with casters provides stability and ease of movement.

Kupp selected as honoree in the Educational Category

Also recognized in this year’s Best of Year awards is Teknion’s Kupp, a nesting chair designed by Scagnellato, Bertolini, Ferrarese. A series of nesting multiuse chairs, inspired by the classic typology of the café chair, Kupp addresses the need for simple, portable seating in spaces where collaboration needs can change in a moment’s notice. Designed for multi-use rooms, the lightly scaled chair works best where furniture needs to be put aside, but not necessarily away in storage. Offered in 27 frame-shell combinations paired with Luum Textiles, Kupp is available in countless finish pairings. The chair comes with an upholstered or plastic seat to further address the needs of any space.

Studio TK’s Sly table series selected as honoree in the Contract Table Category

Sly is a crafted, light-scale occasional table series with a simple, unbalanced approach. The edge detailing creates a sense of non-conformity to the traditional norms. Available top materials include linoleum, laminate, veneer, and back –painted glass. An exposed plywood edge detail is featured with linoleum tops. Back-painted glass is available in 16 colors. Luum’s Mutable Matter Collection selected as honoree in the Contract Textiles Category

The Mutable Matter collection by Suzanne Tick seeks to transform renewable and recycled fibers into new surfaces with energy and texture. Comprising five textiles, the collection explores fiber, structure and process. Mutable Matter focuses on the conditions of the design process, both the craft of weaving and the embroidery, as well as the chemistry of fiber and dye development. Through exploration of the basic components of cloth, Mutable Matter provides a contemporary grouping of upholstery and wall covering options with a range of effects, from earthly to atmospheric.
